IRC Release Outcomes
The Inmate Reception Center is a county jail intake, release, reception, and transfer hub operated by LASD. That role makes IRC release research different from research for a housing-only page. If a person was booked through the IRC, the actual end point may be release from LASD custody, reassignment to Men's Central Jail, Twin Towers, Century Regional Detention Facility, Pitchess, court, a hospital path, CDCR, another county, federal custody, or another agency. The public record should be read as a custody event, not just a building name.
For a routine county release, the record remains an LASD custody record. Use the LASD Inmate Information Center, the 213-473-6100 custody line, LASD release-related PDFs, VINE, Los Angeles Superior Court case access, and an LASD custody records request. If the IRC processing event was really a transfer to CDCR, the later state-prison release path is CDCR CIRIS, CDCR Case Records, DAPO parole, PRCS or probation if applicable, and court records. If an immigration or federal path is suspected, confirm through the agency records that actually show the transfer instead of assuming it from the absence of a current LASD listing.
Confirm IRC Processing Status
Release from the IRC can lag behind a court order or bail event because processing still has to clear agency records. The research supports careful language: a pending release means LASD processing was pending at the snapshot, not that the person has physically walked out.
- Start with the LASD Inmate Information Center or call 213-473-6100 to learn whether the person is still in LASD or LAPD custody.
- Check LASD Custody Reports for the Inmate Releases and LASD Pending Releases PDFs. The Inmate Release Report uses a Projected Release Date field. The Pending Releases report is a pending-processing snapshot.
- Use California VINE or 1-877-VINE-4LA / 1-877-846-3452 for custody status and release or transfer notification on a specific person.
- Check the Los Angeles Superior Court criminal case for the bail, release, dismissal, sentence, or warrant event that explains the IRC processing.
- Request formal release information from LASD if the public tools do not show the date, time, and manner of release.
Why IRC Release Takes Time
The IRC is important because release is not complete the instant a court makes a decision. LASD may still have to verify identity, check other warrants or holds, reconcile booking data, complete property and release paperwork, coordinate transportation or court movement, and resolve medical, hospital, supervision, or detainer questions. CDCR research gives a similar principle for state releases: certified court records, credits, detainers, and case records can control timing after a court order. For IRC pages, the practical point is to confirm live status before traveling and to avoid treating a projected or pending entry as proof of completed release.
Los Angeles County also has a layered custody landscape. A person may pass through the IRC and then be housed at a downtown facility, CRDF, or Pitchess. A missing current listing may mean release, but it can also mean transfer, data lag, court movement, hospital movement, or another agency path. VINE can help with custody-change notification, but VINE is not a complete historical archive. For a formal record, request LASD custody records and compare them with the court case.

The most useful immediate contact for IRC status is still the countywide custody and inmate-location line, 213-473-6100. LASD's records structure then separates custody-related CPRA requests from Records and Identification Bureau services. For a release from IRC processing, the custody-related route is usually the better fit because it covers booking information, incarceration records, inmate records, and custody-related data. About the Inmate Reception Center
The IRC should be described as part of the Los Angeles County Jail System, not as a standalone release database. Its significance is procedural. It is where intake, reception, transfer, and release workflows may converge for the downtown jail complex. That makes it a frequent reference point for family members who have heard that a person is "being released" but cannot yet tell whether LASD has completed the process.
For records purposes, the facility name matters less than the agency and booking. LASD controls the county custody record. The court controls the criminal case and any order that caused release or transfer. CDCR controls later state-prison records if the person was sentenced or transferred to state custody. Federal and immigration records are separate. A good IRC release search keeps those boundaries clear so users do not mistake a transfer or pending release for confirmed community release.
Requesting an IRC Release Record
A purpose-neutral request should identify the person, booking number if known, approximate arrest or booking date, and the records sought. The strongest phrasing asks for booking and release information, including date and time of release, manner of release, release reason or type, releasing facility, and public booking information available under California Government Code section 7923.610. If the agency withholds anything, ask for the specific exemption and for segregable nonexempt portions.
IRC Source Check
Because the IRC is a processing hub, one source often tells only part of the story. The LASD current-custody search may show whether the person is still booked into the jail system. The Pending Releases PDF may show that release processing was pending when the snapshot was generated. The Inmate Release Report may show a projected date, not a completed release. VINE may confirm a custody change or provide notice after a release or transfer. The court record may explain the legal basis for the release, but online court data is not the official court record.
Use the booking number wherever possible. In a high-volume jail system, a name-only search can produce uncertainty, especially if spelling, date of birth, or arrest date is incomplete. A records request that includes the booking number, arrest date, court case number, and last known facility gives LASD a clearer custody event to locate. If the person was processed through the IRC but then housed elsewhere, name the last known LASD facility and ask for the release or transfer record tied to the booking.
When IRC Processing Ends Elsewhere
An IRC record can be the beginning or middle of the custody path. A person may be received, classified, moved to court, moved to another LASD jail, transferred to CDCR, released after bail, or held because another warrant or detainer changed the outcome. If the person was transferred to state prison, do not keep searching LASD for the final prison release. Use CDCR CIRIS for current state custody, CDCR Case Records for records questions, and DAPO or Los Angeles County Probation when parole or PRCS applies.
For federal or immigration paths, keep the same caution. BOP and ICE tools answer their own custody questions. They do not replace LASD records for the local booking and release or transfer event. LASD's immigration-policy materials also caution against assuming immigration enforcement from ordinary local custody. Confirm the receiving agency before writing that an IRC booking ended in anything other than a county release or verified transfer.
